Most people get most of their food from the supermarket. Even most of your homesteaders. Sure they may grow a few rows of corn, or raise a few chickens and provide a fair portion to supplement, but even then a lot of our food still comes from the market, especially in the winter months.
Below is a very cool article about living on a island in South-East Alaska known as the Prince of Wales Island. People there have to survive primarily as hunters and gatherers. When the food is in abundance they become some of the worlds best caners to preserve what they have earned for future use as food is not always readily available.
The read is very interesting for those interested in prepping, homesteading, living off of the grid or just plain ol’ interested in a good read. It covers a lot about hunting/gathering with substance in mind as well as how important canning and preserving is to many people on this earth who do not have the ability to fall back on a supermarket.
