I wouldn’t go as far as to say the guys over at ‘Practical Primitive’ invented the uber match (although I could be wrong!), but their version is excellent. It is very cheap to make, all you need is some strike anywhere matches, cotton balls and some candle wax. Put it all together and you get a very effective firestarter that is waterproof and will light up even when wet (the wax covers the match heads!).
All that is required is some kind of abrasive surface to strike the uber match. No rocks etc.? No problem, just use your zipper! Once lit, the uber match will burn with a much bigger flame than a normal match, and it will easily burn for five minutes. Given how cheap/easy these are to make, I can’t think of a reason not to make some for camping/hiking etc and emergency preparedness and bug-out-bags.
