Protecting Your Family Starts Here: What I Learned from the LDS Way of Preparedness

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints quietly does some of the most impressive preparedness work I have ever seen.

I have always been big on disaster preparedness. Not because I live in panic, but because I love my family and believe in being ready for anything. Over the years, I have looked into all kinds of prepping strategies, but one group has consistently impressed me more than anyone else. That group is the LDS Church.

I am not a full fledged member of the Church yet, but I have learned a lot from them. Their official teachings encourage every household to build up food storage, keep clean water on hand, and prepare for hard times with faith and discipline. It is not about hoarding. It is about being self-reliant, protecting your family, and being in a position to help others when things get difficult. How wonderful to see a faith with this tied into the core.

They have a full guide on food storage, and it is one of the best resources I have seen. It teaches you how to build a three month supply of the foods you already eat, store drinking water, and then slowly build up a long term supply of basics like rice, beans, wheat, oats, and more. It is smart, practical, and deeply rooted in generations of wisdom. You can check it out here:

But here is what really sets them apart. You do not have to be a member of the Church to benefit from any of this. The Church operates storehouses that sell long term storage food to the public. These are high quality products, professionally packaged, sealed to last 20 to 30 years, and sold at extremely fair prices. You can walk in and buy food without being a member, and you will be treated with kindness and respect.

Back in August of 2013 I visited one of their canneries in Canandaigua New York. I was not interested in religion at the time. I just knew that these people took preparedness seriously, especially in places like Utah. They welcomed me, showed me how the process worked, and sent me on my way. I ended up spending around 231 dollars and walked away with an incredible haul of food with 20 plus year shelf life. I got bulk pancake mix, pinto beans, oats, rice, flour, sugar, and more. They even used to host canning and food storage workshops open to the public. That is the kind of real world value and service you do not see enough of anymore.

Fast forward over a decade and I have found myself coming back to the Church. Not just for the food storage, but for the faith itself. The values they teach about being prepared, being responsible, and taking care of others spoke to me in a way few things ever have. I am planning to visit their Palmyra storehouse soon, but you can also buy many of these same food storage products online. Their shipping is fast and very affordable.

Whether you are religious or not, you can learn something from the Latter-day Saints. You do not need to convert. You just need to be willing to learn. These are wonderful people who will help you in all the ways they can.
